Is there good coffee now in all 50 United States? Probably. Actually, scratch that—definitely. There’s no state in the American union as yet untouched by the specialty coffee boom. For example, you might be wondering, “What’s cracking for good coffee up in New Hampshire?” A great question! Let’s check out Profile Coffee Bar, a brand new spot focusing on ristretto espressos, cold brew, and Counter Culture Coffee in an up-and-coming neighborhood of Portsmouth.
As told to Sprudge by Andrew Levinson.
For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Profile Coffee Bar crafts both traditional and innovative espresso and coffee beverages to the highest standards, and serves those beverages in a space that invites customers to socialize, enjoy great coffee and food, and relax. We are located in the burgeoning North End of Portsmouth, NH, which includes a variety of modern developments that complement the historic districts of a charming New England port town.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
Profile has an innovative approach to coffee and an atmosphere to match. Reclaimed lumber is used generously throughout the space and is complemented by stainless steel countertops and modern furnishings. All of the work was crafted by local artists, architects, and carpenters.
What’s your approach to coffee?
Profile focuses on pulling ristretto shots of espresso, which are known for their caramelly sweet flavor and rich, full-body taste. Our goal is to make coffee that tastes as good as freshly ground coffee smells. We feature the coffees of Counter Culture Coffee, a great partner and resource for a new business.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
We pull ristretto espresso on a La Marzocco Strada EE. Our pour-over coffees are prepared using Chemex which helps us brew coffees with exceptional clarity, highlighting the subtleties and complexities of both the year-round blends and single-origin offerings from Counter Culture. We additionally feature cold brew coffee on tap.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
We opened on July 15 after a two-day soft open. Construction began in early April, so we were very pleased with the opening timeline.
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
We worked with Tom Palm of Design & Layout Services on our technical/equipment layout and locally with TMS Architects of Portsmouth. In addition, the interior carpentry was a product of a local carpenter, Ross Kramer of Kramer Built. In addition, we worked with a local creative agency, CatchFire Creative on branding / logo development and marketing.
