The time to turn in your application for the 2017 Good Food Awards is rapidly coming to a close. To be included in the sixth annual ceremony honoring outstanding flavor combined with ethical production, entries must be completed by July 31st (that’s Sunday).
Past winners include coffees from Onyx Coffee Lab, Commonwealth Coffee, Blue Bottle, and Madcap. But this year, the criteria will be altered, making entry slightly more rigorous than previous years. According to the GFA’s coffee criteria:
Last year, we encouraged roasters to submit entries possessing third-party certifications, while also allowing submissions that carried a strong and compelling case in lieu of certification. That 2016 Awards vetting period, done in cooperation with the Roasters Guild, demonstrated that verification of practices at nondomestic farms remains complicated and difficult to evaluate at a distance.
At the strong recommendation of our partners at the Roasters Guild, we therefore move to a fully certification-based sustainability vetting process for the 2017 Awards.[/su_note note]
This means that in order to be eligible for the Awards, your submitted coffee must be certified through at least one of the following programs: NOP Organic, Fair Trade (FTUSA/Fairtrade International), SMBC Shade, Rainforest Alliance, C.A.F.E Practices, 4C/CAS – Global Coffee Platform, or Demeter Biodynamic.
