There are so many great things that can be done with coffee. It can be used for art, made into roads, you can even drink it, but did you know you could also throw it? Well you can, and there’s a competition to see who can throw it the best. It’s called the World Coffee Throwing Competition, and if you’ll be in Dublin during the 2016 World Barista Championship, you can test your arm against some of the planet’s best walking coffee trebuchets.
Hosted by Tamper Tantrum, the World Coffee Throwing Competition takes place on Friday, June 24th at The Bernard Shaw, and the rules are as simple as they are complex. Each competitor must throw a bag of roasted coffee (there goes my plan of using green coffee for its higher density) weighing no less than one kilogram, sealed using any commercially available means – vac-packed, valved, sealed, etc.; no duct tape. If the bag rips, you’re DQ’ed. A point is earned for every meter the bag travels with additional points being awarded for bringing a napkin, pouring water into a glass before throwing, and “overall impression and synergy.” Whoever has the most points wins.
If you’d like a glimpse at what this unique competition looks like, check out our coverage of the first-ever Irish Coffee Throwing Championships, which took place last summer in Dublin.
The cost is €5.00 to compete and free to spectate, but those interested in doing either should reserve there spot soon by going here, because this place will heave with muscly-armed bodies and there not going to be room for everyone. All registration proceeds go to Grounds For Health, who provide health care to women in coffee growing regions.
More information and a full set of rules, including the Random Disqualification Klaxon (everyone loves the Random Disqualification Klaxon until they get bit by the Random Disqualification Klaxon), can be found at the World Coffee Throwing Competition’s website or Facebook page.
