The AV Club is expanding their purview. The somewhat more serious sister-site of the Onion has been a one-stop shop for all things music, movies, TV shows, video games, and general lols, and they have recently added food to that list with the creation of their newest section, the Supper Club. Food news, food think pieces, recipies and how-tos, they’re all part of the Supper Club. And in their most recent installment, they teach you how to make bacon coffee jam.
The video tutorial is hosted by AV Club food editor Kevin Pang and is part of their Kevin’s Bacon series, presumably a vehicle for the AV Club to get their hands on some of that sweet, fatty Hormel Black Label Bacon advertising money. Shot in the style of a decaying VHS tape (and can we stop it with the whole VHS tape thing already? I blame Tim and Eric. Controversial opinion alert: Tim and Eric isn’t funny, and Tim and Eric aren’t brilliant), the video is a combination of get-rich-quick infomercial and cooking tutorial.
And the AV Club was nice enough to include the recipe in text format so you don’t have to keep rewinding (which is presumably what caused all that tape decay in the first place):
2 yellow onions, sliced
½ cup brown sugar
⅔ cup coffee
3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp sriracha
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
- Dice bacon (easier to dice if placed in freezer for 20 mins)
- Fry bacon in skillet until slightly crispy. Remove bacon and set aside.
- Take out half the bacon drippings from skillet. (Save it!)
- Add sliced onions to bacon pan and sauté for 15 minutes until soft and yellow. Remove excess liquid.
- Add back cooked bacon, along with brown sugar, coffee, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, sriracha, and mustard.
- Bring to boil, then lower heat to simmer. Stir occasionally for next 30 minutes. Let cool and store in jar. Keeps for one week.
The recipe is straightforward, not very time-consuming, and has coffee, though we think you could probably jam a little more coffee in there. But what do we know? We’re a coffee site not a cooking site.
