Sometimes a Nice Package starts with having a Nice Logo, and we think Perc Coffee out of Savannah, Georgia has just about one of the coolest dang logos we’ve ever seen. Something about that giant “P”—its font and curvature—has made quite an impression on all of here as Nice Package. The logo looks like something from a 1970s construction sign, equal parts utility and Americana. Let’s learn more about the look in our stirring conversation with Perc Coffee’s TK
As told to Sprudge by Jonna O’Sullivan.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your company?
When we started in 2010, it was just Philip [Brown], a 12kilo Diedrich, a backpack, and a bike with the goal of bringing next level coffee to the city of Savannah. Now we are 10 strong and roasting more than 2500 pounds a week on our 25kilo with our roasts available across the Southeast.
When did this package design debut?
The new bags were released in the fall of 2015. We were in the process of launching our new website when we got the news that Whole Foods wanted to take the brand region-wide. Things were beginning to take off, and we really wanted to get our bag game on point.
Who designed the packaging?
Our buddy Steven Scarborough created the logo back in the day and Kay Wolfersperger designed our bags. We were working with Kay on our new website, and it was just a natural progression of the brand.
Please describe the look in your own words!
We were shooting for simple and elegant, but not stuffy. The lightning bolts were added on the sides and bottom for fun. Our goal is to offer insanely good coffee with no pretensions, riding the thin line of being choosey without being snobby.
What coffee information do you share on the package? What’s the motivation behind that?
Each label states the country of origin, the farm or coop, the altitude in meters above sea level, the processing method, and three most distinct flavor notes. We wanted to keep the bag fairly simple and straightforward. If you’re interested in learning more about each coffee, there are plenty of additional details on our website.
Where is the package manufactured and printed?
Pacific Bag printed our bags. Our labels are printed here in Savannah at Clayton Digital Reprographics.
What type of package is it?
We went with a 12oz Block Bottom bag with a oneway valve and a pocket zipper. The block bottoms sit so nicely on the shelf, and the zipper allows you to reseal the bags as you use them to ensure maximum freshness. To that end, we have also added a nitrogen flush on our ActionPac packing machine.
What’s next?
A matching custom 5lb bag is in the works for our wholesale accounts. We are also in the process of adding a vacuum sealer to go along with the nitrogen flusher. I really think our customers are going to appreciate having a resealable bag that stays super fresh.
Thank you!
Thanks so much for including on Sprudge – we love you guys!
