UPDATE: Matt Viser revealed in a follow-up feature that the Obama White House serves Starbucks.
In his article from today’s Boston Globe, reporter and coffee geek Matt Viser goes on an extensive hunt to find who exactly is roasting the coffee that ultimately ends up in the mug of the most powerful man in the Free World. Creator of Double Shot, the Globe’s lifestyle blog documenting the intersection between coffee and politics, Viser understands the important role coffee plays in steering our country:
But mums the word from White House on who they are serving, citing “security concerns.” After giving a brief history of presidential love affairs with coffee, Viser puts boots on the ground in search of the answer. Calls to Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Intelligentsia, and Blue Bottle result in bupkis. Viser ultimately uncovers the White House’s last known coffee order, from Hawaii’s Kona Rainforest Farm in July of 2013, before concluding that there must be other, more clandestine sources.
In the end, Viser comes up empty-handed on the coffee’s source, but does uncover something far more shocking – Obama isn’t a coffee drinker. That’s right, any time you see the President holding what looks like a cup of coffee, he’s really drinking tea. As the nation mourns this startling discovery, one can’t help but wonder what else the White House is keeping from the American people.
My opinion: Obama is secretly a Kenyan coffee drinker.
