In an exclusive interview at last weekend’s La Marzocco Out of the Box event in Milan, St. Ali owner Salvator Malasta revealed that the company is opening a roastery and cafe in Jakarta, Indonesia later this year. In a partnership with Indonesia’s Common Grounds Coffee, St. Ali will open a 120 seat cafe located in Setiabudi One, roughly across the street from the Australian Embassy. A roastery will operate in Tomang, in nearby West Jakarta.

Malatesta tells us that the cafe will be similar in scope to St. Ali’s existing cafes in Melbourne, serving a full menu at the helm of chefs Andrew Gale and Mark Richardson, who will personally travel to Jakarta to oversee the kitchen. Australian national champion Barista Matt Perger will also be taking a temporary stay, along with St. Ali’s Ben Morrow (recently seen winning the New York Coffee Masters tournament) and Lachland Ward, who will operate as the venue’s manager.

The space will serve espresso with La Marzocco espresso machines, and offer filter coffee via a massive one hundred meter brew bar. The company will ship biodynamic non-homogenized milk and fresh produce from Melbourne.

“I’m flabbergasted, flattered, and honored,” Malatesta tells us, “that Tourism Australia is offering its full support of the project.” Malatesta tells us that he is excited to serve the Jakarta coffee community, which is a quickly up-and-coming market in Indonesia’s most populous city, with nearly ten million people. In comparison, Melbourne has just over four and half million.

St. Ali teamed up with Common Grounds last year in September, taking over the company’s brew bar for a week in September. The company plans to open another space in Bali in March of 2016.
