The king is dead! Long live the king! Oregon Live broke the news today that Portland restaurateur and Stumptown Coffee Roasters founder Duane Sorenson is getting back into the coffee game. Two years after selling Stumptown to Peet’s Coffee, Sorensen is opening Puff Coffee.
Oregon Live reports that the currently under construction roastery will be in the space behind The Woodsman Tavern–one of Sorenson’s many excellent culinary endeavors—mere steps away from where he opened the original Stumptown. The expected opening date is later this year in November.
Sorenson states that he is “champing at the bit to get back to his first passion, coffee.” Up until now, he has been unable to get back in the game, thanks to a non-compete clause that was part of Peet’s buyout of Stumptown. But that non-compete is set to expire, and “both Stumptown and Peet’s have given them his blessing” to Puff away.
“I miss roasting coffee,” Sorenson says. “I want to roast coffee. I miss turning on the coffee roasters and smelling the coffee all day long and working directly with the farms, and I pushed and pushed and went nuts with Stumptown.”
More details are sure to follow over the coming months, but for now we know that one of the founders of the third-wave coffee movement in America is getting back in the saddle.
