Hello there, dear Sprudge reader. Jordan Michelman and Zachary Carlsen here, the founders of this here website. Today we have some exciting news to share with you.
We wrote a book! It’s called The New Rules of Coffee: A Modern Guide For Everyone, and it comes out this fall from Ten Speed Press, a division of Penguin Random House. The book is available today for pre-order, but we’ve been working on this project in secret over much of the last year. It feels so good to let this cat out of the bag and tell you more about this, the very first book from the makers of Sprudge.
If you read Sprudge every day, there’s plenty in this book for you to enjoy—it is 100% original material, written over a series of feverish, cloistered writing sessions in Portland and Los Angeles. From tips and tricks to jokes and takes, this book is a collection of what we’ve learned over the past decade publishing Sprudge, with sections on coffee’s place in the home, the cafe, and across the planet. If you’re a knowledgeable coffee professional with 25 coffee books on their shelf, we hope this volume helps contribute in some small way—even if it’s just a few laughs.
But really we wrote this book for our families—and yours—to provide a service to the coffee curious, and to help catch people up who are mystified by coffee’s meteoric growth over the last decade. It is to say gently, with a smile and a nudge, “Hey—you’ve been drinking coffee all your life, but a lot has happened in the last 10 years or so. Let’s get up to speed together.”
It’s a book for coffee pros to give their moms, to say “Look! This is what I do.” A book for Jan in accounting (she loves coffee, after all) or your jittery uncle Greg, who drinks five K-Cups a day, or your mee-maw, who has enjoyed her Folgers Crystals the same way since 1975 and is utterly mystified by how you make a living. A book for casual coffee drinkers and coffee obsessives alike.
It’s a modern guide for everyone, basically.
The New Rules of Coffee debuts Tuesday, September 18th, featuring gorgeous, original full color illustrations by award winning comic artist Kelsey Wroten, whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, Bitch Magazine, Bust, NPR, T Magazine, Lucky Peach, and The New York Times, to name just a few. Wroten’s debut graphic novel with Uncivilized Books comes out later this year. You should follow her brilliant work as Juke Box Comix on Instagram and Tumblr.
Partnership with Ten Speed Press has been a literal dream come true for us. We’ve been followers of the publishing house for many years, voraciously consuming cookbooks by Aaron Franklin of Franklin BBQ, Yotam Ottolenghi, Andy Ricker of Pok Pok, and Wesley Avila of Guerrilla Tacos; lauded beverage books like Peter Liem’s beautiful and authoritative Champagne, the essential Meehan’s Bartender Manual by Peter Meehan, and of course Jon Bonne’s The New Wine Rules, to which you can consider our own text a caffeinated companion; and books from popular media companies like Food52 and Munchies. As independent website publishers we are thrilled to be in such company.
We can’t wait for you to read The New Rules of Coffee. Coffee has a rich tradition of books and it is very meaningful for us to contribute our own volume to this history. As we get closer to book launch we’ll be announcing a series of promotional events, readings and parties across the United States and around the world to help ring in the reality of this project, and to get this book into hands worldwide. For now, advance pre-sale is available via Penguin Random House.
Whether you’re here for the first time today, or have visited us every day since 2009, thank you for reading Sprudge.
